Dance Major

The BA in Dance invovles students in creative inquiry, innovative collaboration, embodied knowledge and skillful expression of ideas as they explore the power of performance to engender positive social change and personal transformation. Majors are encouraged to develop individual identities as artists/thinkers, creative communicators and risk takers. Students train to become technically fluent and integrated movers. The major emphasizes a breadth of experiential study that engages students in choreography, dance pedagogy, history and somatic investigation, cutivating creative empowerment, curiosity and embodied research. Majors leave Gustavus with an expanded world view of dance having gained an understanding of its impact historically, socially and politically over the ages. The program prepares students for graduate study, and/or for professional work in the field of dance. It also provides students with experience and confidence with collaboration, creative imagination, self-expression, problem-solving, critical analysis and empathy- abilitites crucial to every walk of life.
