B/E 382 Money & Banking

Course Description

This course studies the theoretical and practical aspects of financial markets, commercial banking, central banking, and monetary policy. Particularly, we focus on [1] components of the financial system, [2] money, bond, and other financial assets, [3] determinants of interest rates and their behavior, [4] commercial and central banking, and [5] the effects of monetary policy and exchange rate policy on the macroeconomy. Students apply the course materials and write a semester-long project on the analysis of a chosen international currency crisis, such as the Mexican peso crisis of 1994, the Asian financial crisis of 1997, and the Russian financial crisis of 1998. Prerequisites: B/E-107 or E/M-108 and E/M-109, B/E-110, MCS-142, and MCS-119 or MCS-121. Fall semester
