Academic Standing and Sanctions

Academic Standing Gustavus Adolphus College’s Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) criteria help ensure that students complete their requirements to graduate in a timely manner. In order to receive a bachelor’s degree students must complete 128 credits and attain a minimum 2.0 cumulative grade point average.

In the academic standing categories that follow:

  1. Year-in-residence (YIR) is determined by how many years a student has been registered at Gustavus. A student coming directly from high school is a year-in-residence first-year regardless of number of credits. Likewise, a transfer student from another college is, in their first-year at Gustavus, a year-in-residence first-year student.

  2. Completion rate includes all credits attempted. Both withdrawals and incompletes count as part of the total number of credits attempted and count as non-completed credits (in the case of an incomplete grade, until the incomplete is replaced by the new grade).

Students on academic warning, probation, or suspension are not permitted to participate in an internship or study away. Students who register for such programs and courses accept the financial risks associated with being barred from participating should they be on academic warning, probation, or suspended when the term begins. These financial risks include, but are not limited to, unrecoverable deposits, fares, reservations, and prorated group travel costs.
