PHI 212 Opression and Privilege

Course Description

A philosophical exploration of the categories of sex and gender, race, ability, and class. Questions to be considered may include: Are these categories constructed or "natural?" How have philosophers used these categories to justify and explain the hierarchical structures of societies? How do these systems disadvantage some while providing advantages to others? How can individuals engage in constructive resistance to these systems? This focus is primarily on US identities and communities, which are remarkably pluralistic. This course counts toward fulfillment of the Gender, Women and Sexuality Studies major/minor and Peace Studies minor. USIDG, Offered occasionally.
