Description

Athletic Training is a dynamic career involving educating and treating patients, collaborating with other healthcare professionals and helping athletes and people with physically-demanding jobs reduce injury risk, recover from injury and illness, and improve their performance. The program is grounded in the Gustavus holistic liberal arts approach, paired with extensive hands-on clinical experiences to prepare our graduates for leadership roles and productive careers in the athletic training field. Gustavus MAT students have the opportunity to work closely with Gustavus faculty and gain hands-on experience with student athletes across all 23 sports at the College, along with exciting off-campus experiences at high schools, clinics, industries, and more—locally and across the country.

The program emphasizes athletic trainers’ roles in the larger healthcare system and foster leadership skills.

At Gustavus you’ll:

  • Expose and explore in year one by developing a deep foundation of skills development during on-campus coursework and local clinical experiences

  • Expand and examine in year two via online courses and multiple clinical immersive experiences in unique clinical experiences across the state and country

  • Attain the necessary knowledge and skills to demonstrate professional preparedness, including a capacity for life-long learning and professional growth

  • Work within a team-focused health care model

  • Learn critical thinking skills

  • Develop advanced knowledge and experience in reading, understanding, and integrating current health-related research

  • Complete at least one immersive clinical experience each year, supervised and monitored for safety and compliance with CAATE standards

The 3-2 program option is for students to obtain a bachelor’s and a master’s degree from Gustavus in five years. The 4-2 option is for students who have a BA from another institution or Gustavus and want to obtain their master’s degree from Gustavus. The MAT program will have up to 20 slots; 10 of those will be held for Gustavus students and will be released if they go unclaimed.
