Philosophy Minor

The philosophy department invites students to become attuned to a universe in constant and volatile change, and to explore how philosophy can help us reimagine our place within it, opening ourselves to the constant, uncomfortable examination which makes life worth living.

The philosophy minor at Gustavus offers students a flexible curriculum in which to cultivate the capacities of intellectual curiosity and openness, self-awareness and self-discovery, while developing concrete skills in close reading, argument analysis, reflective questioning and writing. The minor guides students not only in exploring ideas commonly deemed “philosophy,” but also in realizing the philosophical questions that emerge from their specific contexts, ancestries, and visions of what is to come.

Philosophy minors complete a minimum of five courses, with a grade of C- or higher. One of those courses must be either PHI 201, Ancient Philosophy or PHI 202, Modern Philosophy). Students select additional courses in consultation with their advisor. No more than one course numbered 125 or below can count for the minor.

We encourage any student curious about philosophy to meet with a member of the department, to explore their path through a major or minor in philosophy. Their advisor can help them to explore opportunities to study philosophy outside of the classroom, through a study away program or an internship or independent study opportunity.
