Simple Requirements

Completion requirement
Complete at least 1 of the following Courses:
  • GEO110 Our Planet
    AND     GEO111 Our Planet Lab
  • GEO120 Geochem of Environ
    AND     GEO121 Geochem of Environ Lab

Must complete both the lecture and lab section of the selected introductory course sequence.

Complete ALL of the following Courses:
  • GEO262 Evolution of Earth
    AND     GEO263 Evolution of Earth Lab
  • GEO264 Earth Surface Processes
    AND     GEO265 Earth Surface Lab
  • GEO266 Earth Materials
    AND     GEO267 Earth Materials Lab
  • GEO392 Research in Geology I
  • GEO393 Research in Geology II
Earn at least 20 credits from the following:

An additional course from outside GEO that supplements a particular student’s academic trajectory may be substituted with permission.

Majors must complete one approved field experience.

An approved field experience is fieldwork conducted independently by the student, outside of field work required as part of a course. This might include field leadership (e.g., as a teaching assistant), conducting or assisting with field research, participation in a course-based field trip after previously completing the course, or fieldwork associated with summer positions or internships. Students should work with their advisor to ensure that they have planned for this field experience.

Complete ALL of the following Courses:
  • CHE110 General Chemistry
    AND     CHE111 General Chemistry Lab
Students intending graduate study should plan to take 3-5 additional courses beyond the major. Depending on a student’s interests these might include courses in mathematics, statistics, computer science, chemistry, biology, physical geography, and/or physics. Many graduate schools also require a field course.


There is no minimum grade requirements for courses within the Geology major. Students must achieve an institutional grade point average, including major classes, of 2.0 to graduate.

Study Away

Students are encouraged to take advantage of study away opportunities available at Gustavus Courses taken abroad can be applied towards the Geology major, if approved in consultation with the department. International sites that offer Geology courses recognized by the department include programs in Great Britain, Australia, New Zealand, Denmark, and Sweden
